The advent of AI Overviews has significantly altered the landscape of search results, yet many paid search strategies remain unchanged. Traditionally, the approach has been to increase bids for high-performing queries and decrease them for underperforming ones. However, this method fails in B2B and industrial sectors, where lengthy sales cycles and limited conversion data complicate matters. With Google's direct answers on search pages, the value of paid clicks varies by keyword. Some queries still lead to commercial decisions, making top placements valuable, while others are resolved within AI responses, shifting the focus from clicks to brand influence. A third category has emerged where zero-click results dominate, rendering paid search ineffective. To navigate these challenges, I categorize strategies into three distinct approaches: Fight, Influence, and Generate Demand. The 'Fight' category targets bottom-of-funnel queries with clear commercial intent, where winning the auction is crucial. 'Influence' focuses on queries where the AI provides educational content, aiming for brand visibility within the answers. Lastly, 'Generate Demand' addresses scenarios where zero-click results prevail, emphasizing the need for proactive demand generation efforts. Understanding these frameworks allows marketers to optimize their paid search strategies effectively.
