The analysis defined a category owner as a brand that appeared in at least four out of five related prompts and led its closest competitor by a minimum of 5 percentage points. Of the 1,094 categories examined, only a small portion met this criterion. Furthermore, 31.2% of categories had a brand that was emerging as a leader, while 53.7% were categorized as unsettled, showing no brand presence in at least three prompts. Interestingly, in the top half of topics by AI search demand, only 11.3% had a clear owner, contrasting with 19% in the lower half. Traditional SEO metrics were found to have limited effectiveness in predicting topic ownership, with branded search volume being the only significant metric. The study also highlighted that the most-cited domains did not always correlate with the most-mentioned brands, suggesting that visibility in AI search is complex and multifaceted.
