Cloudflare to Launch Quantum-Resistant TLS Certificates

On Tuesday, Cloudflare announced its intention to roll out TLS certificates designed to withstand potential quantum computing attacks, marking a significant step in internet security. These certificates will utilize a cryptographic method believed to be resilient against the capabilities of future quantum computers. The company plans to implement an open-source platform that will provide both traditional TLS certificates and a new variant called Merkle Tree Certificates. Notably, these hybrid certificates will be available at no cost to all users, regardless of their subscription status. To facilitate widespread adoption, Cloudflare will acquire a trusted certificate root from GlobalSign, enabling millions of websites to seamlessly transition to post-quantum certificates without compromising performance. This initiative is part of a broader transformation of the web's public key infrastructure (WebPKI), aimed at ensuring secure encryption and authentication in a future dominated by quantum technology. The transition will involve significant engineering efforts across various sectors, including operating systems, browsers, and certificate authorities, and is expected to take several years to fully implement.
