U.S. Authorities Take Down Major IoT Botnets Behind DDoS Attacks

The U.S. Justice Department has collaborated with law enforcement in Canada and Germany to dismantle the infrastructure of four major botnets that exploited over three million Internet of Things (IoT) devices, including routers and cameras. These botnets, identified as Aisuru, Kimwolf, JackSkid, and Mossad, have been linked to a series of unprecedented distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks capable of incapacitating various targets. The Department of Defense's investigative unit executed seizure warrants on several domains and servers associated with these attacks, particularly those aimed at Department of Defense assets. The operators of these botnets allegedly executed hundreds of thousands of DDoS assaults, often extorting victims for payments. The oldest botnet, Aisuru, alone initiated over 200,000 attack commands. The DOJ's operation aimed to halt further infections and diminish the botnets' capacity for future attacks, with support from numerous tech companies. This initiative coincided with actions in Canada and Germany against individuals believed to be behind these botnets, although details on these suspects remain scarce.
