A recently emerged ransomware variant named Kyber has gained attention for its assertion of employing quantum-safe encryption techniques. This ransomware, which has been active since at least September, claims to utilize the Module Lattice-based Key Encapsulation Mechanism (ML-KEM). This encryption standard is overseen by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The name Kyber is derived from the alternate designation of the ML-KEM algorithm. The marketing strategy behind Kyber emphasizes its supposed resilience against potential quantum computer attacks. ML-KEM operates as an asymmetric encryption method for secure key exchange, relying on mathematical lattice problems that do not provide quantum computers with any computational advantage over traditional systems. This positions ML-KEM as a prospective successor to existing cryptographic methods like Elliptic Curve and RSA, which are vulnerable to sufficiently powerful quantum computing capabilities.
