Rebuilding from Scratch: Our Journey

Discover how we transformed our App Platform to meet growing demands.

Hello, Habr! I'm Alexey Kirdyashkin, and I work in infrastructure development at Timeweb Cloud. We offer a service called App Platform, previously known as Apps. In essence, this is a managed platform built on top of VDS that allows for application deployment directly from Git, eliminating the need for manual server configurations. I was involved with App Platform during its MVP phase, contributing to its adaptation for our infrastructure and working on its architecture. Essentially, I guided the service from its initial prototype to a production-ready state handling real user traffic. Initially, everything functioned well—applications were deployed, users engaged, and the platform expanded. However, as we scaled, we identified architectural choices that were suitable for the MVP but inadequate for a larger service. Consequently, we decided to completely rebuild the existing service from the ground up. This article delves into the reasons and processes behind this significant transformation.
