In collaboration with Kevin Indig, we examined nearly 4,000 instances of domain appearances across various AI platforms, including ChatGPT and Google AI. The findings indicate a significant distinction in how AI systems recognize citations versus brand mentions, leading to a phenomenon termed 'ghost citations.' These ghost citations occur frequently, leaving brands unacknowledged despite being referenced. This study sheds light on the implications for marketers aiming to enhance their brand's presence in AI-driven searches. To address this issue, marketers should focus on optimizing their content for AI algorithms, ensuring that their brand is not only cited but also prominently recognized in AI outputs. By understanding the mechanics of AI citation practices, brands can strategize more effectively to boost their visibility in an increasingly AI-centric digital landscape.
